Location, Location, Location...

Picture
Your puppy playpen can go anywhere in the house - preferably close to wherever you spend most of your time! In a safe place, a bit out of the way so you don't constantly fall over the puppy playpen or have to walk around it, but not so isolated where your tiny puppy can't see and watch what is going on around it, or where you miss crucial clues in monitoring its well-being throughout the day. I have one next to my bed, one by my recliner and one in my office near the computer desk.

Choose a draft free spot to set up!

Draft free both in regards to windows and doors, as well as ceiling fans and air conditioner/heating ducts. Do keep in mind - if you are picking a spot in front of windows, sliding or french doors - the sun may move into that spot and overheat your baby while you're busy elsewhere or away at work! Make it a safe place - temperature wise comfortable all day long for your teacup puppy!

If you are choosing a permanent spot [in other words you are not moving your teacup puppy around with the playpen during the day or you have multiple playpens set up throughout the house] be sure to observe it for a day or two, to make sure it is in a suitable location as outlined above, at any time of the day, before you leave the pup alone to go out or go to work.

Temperature Control...

Picture
Overheating your tiny puppy is just as dangerous than for it getting chilled - precious energy is used up for regulating the body heat, and that is something your tiny baby can't afford to waste. Choose the location carefully – especially if the pup needs to spend time alone at home.

If you are living up north or in a fairly drafty house to begin with, it might benefit the baby, if you wrap a blanket around the sides of the playpen during the colder months of the year or while it is still very young.

This also tends to help with new teacup puppies that go through separation anxiety or don't seem to be able to settle or to relax, due to visual over-stimulation or because they are new arrivals to your home.

As an additional aid in keeping warm, consider offering a heated electric pad or bed, or consider some thermal pads or bedding such as the ones shown below...
